Apple fritters are so simple to make and can be ready and on the table in less than 30 minutes. In fact, they only require a few apples and a couple staple ingredients you probably already have in the cupboard.
In my opinion, the secret to the perfect homemade apple fritter is letting them fry until they are a nice deep golden brown. I let them fry for about 3 to 5 minutes on each side (which is longer than you might think). I find this gives them the perfect texture and makes them nice and crispy on the outside.
It also helps to not make them too big: I use between ¼ cup and ⅓ cup of batter for each fritter. I’ve actually found that the easiest and best way to measure out the batter is using an ice cream scoop with a squeeze handle. The batter releases from the scoop so easily and they all come out the same size!
WHAT KIND OF APPLES ARE BEST FOR APPLE FRITTERS?
It doesn’t make too much of a difference which apples you use for the fritters. When it’s apple season in our area, I like to use whatever I can find that is fresh and local like Gravenstein or McIntosh.
One thing I would like to note here is the texture of the apples. By cutting the apples into fairly small pieces (I cut them into about ¼” dice), they will soften slightly but will still be relatively firm inside the fritters. This is the traditional (and simpler) way of making apple fritters. However, if you like your apples to have a softer texture, you can sauté them in butter for a couple of minutes until they are softened, and then fold them into the batter once they have cooled.
In this recipe, I drizzle the fritters with a simple glaze, but you can just as easily coat them in powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, or just leave them plain!
To make the apple fritters, pour enough vegetable oil into a large pot to reach a depth of about one and a half inches. Heat the vegetable oil to approximately 350℉.
Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the dry ingredients: the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Then, a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
Add the mixture of wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
Fold in the apples, which have been peeled, cored, and cut into a ¼-inch dice.
With a scoop, drop in between ¼ cup and ⅓ cup of the batter into the hot oil. (I use an ice cream scoop with a squeeze handle.)
Fry for about 3 to 5 minutes on each side (longer than you think!), until they are dark golden brown and crisp.
Meanwhile, if desired, prepare the glaze.
In a small bowl, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla. Mix the glaze until it is well combined and reaches your desired consistency.
Drizzle the glaze over the apple fritters, then serve and enjoy!
